Elliot Greene, M.A., has more than thirty-seven years experience in massage therapy as a practitioner, author, and teacher. He has served in a variety of volunteer leadership roles, including four years as national president of the American Massage Therapy Association, seven years as chair of the state regulatory body for massage therapy in Maryland, chair of the steering committee that initiated the national certification program, and chair or member of numerous committees. He also played a key role in the founding of the Massage Therapy Foundation and the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation in the early 1990s. He has received several professional honors, including the AMTA Distinguished Service Award, AMTA President's Award, FSMTA National Achievement Award, and National Certification Founder's Award. He has authored numerous published articles and was a major contributor in NIH's groundbreaking report on complementary and alternative medical practices, Alternative Medicine: Expanding Medical Horizons. His work in massage therapy is complemented by his graduate training and work experience in body-oriented psychotherapy. His interest in the interaction of the body and mind serves as the foundation for his book The Psychology of the Body (Lippincott), written to teach massage therapist, bodyworkers, and somatic practitioners about dealing with the psychological dimensions and issues that arise from working with the body. He has a private practice in Wheaton, Maryland.
